Woodland’s New 4 Cohort Schedule

Woodland’s new schedule starting April 19th was designed so that 75% of students can be in the building at a time. This change offers both the original cohorts, Hawks and Woodland, to be in person more, and get a chance to see more of their peers.

“[The benefits] of students being here in person every day is the positive face to face learning. I have had overwhelming feedback, from both parents and students, that they perform better when they are in school,” said Woodland’s Vice Principal, Ryan Mackenzie.

The schedule will remain A-A-A-B-B and A-A-B-B-B. Administrators decided to keep it this way because it will end up being more consistent with the ratio of students who are in on A days and students who are in on B days.

“Assessments would have actually been much harder for teachers with an A-B schedule, and an opportunity not to change another piece [of the schedule] is helpful to parents and students,” said Mackenzie. Therefore, instead of going back to the A B day schedules we had last year, the schedule will be kept the same.

Students will be in school more days than they previously had. Instead of a two-cohort system, it will now be a four-cohort system based on the following last name initial:

Cohort #1 = Last Name A-D

 Cohort #2 = Last Name E-K

Cohort #3 = Last Name L-P

Cohort #4 = Last Name Q-Z

The four-cohort system provides students a chance to see peers that they have not seen in over a year. Every day the schedule will continue to rotate, meaning that the first day cohorts 1, 2, and 3 will be in school. That Tuesday, cohorts 2, 3, and 4 will be in school. Wednesday, cohorts 3, 4, and 1 will be in person. Thursday, cohorts 4, 1, and 2 will be in school, and the first Friday, April 22nd, will be a full distance learning day for everyone.

Friday, April 22nd, is the day that all teachers can get their second dose of their COVID-19 vaccination.

“It was important that the teachers were vaccinated on a Friday because it gives them the weekend to monitor any possible side effects,” Mackenzie said. “It won’t count as part of the rotation, meaning that the schedule the following week (Monday-Thursday) will be the same as the first.”

“We will have to make sure that we are maintaining the importance of proper mask wearing and social distancing,” Mackenzie said. “But Woodland is fully prepared to make any needed changes.”

During lunch, juniors and seniors will have the option to sit in tents outside, and on rainy days students, will be moved into classrooms. Certain classrooms might have to switch with others as well depending on the number of students that are in person. It will also help prepare the students and teachers for the Fall of next year.

“This schedule is going to improve the learning quality for all students,” Mackenzie says.  “And we want them to know that students are always wanted here.”
