Carnation Fundraiser Spreads Love at Woodland

This Valentine’s Day, Woodland’s class of 2024 decided  to spread some extra love by selling carnations around the school.

Based on the intended recipient, students were able to choose between a red or white flower. Consumers purchased red carnations for significant others or secret admirers and white for friends or relatives.

Gentiana Ukaj, class of 2024 advisor liked the idea of this fundraiser because it was pandemic friendly.

“With COVID, [class of 2024 board members] figured that this would be a good fundraiser because there’s not that much interaction between us and the students during the process,” said Ukaj.

Students bought carnations by either filling out a form on Schoology or handing in their money in person. The flowers were $1 each, which included the option to either leave a message, or a signature; it cost $2 to do both. These options also allowed the flowers to be sent anonymously if desired. The sales ended on February 5th and the carnations were delivered during the week of the 8th.

“We ordered 200 flowers and ended up selling all of them,” said Ukaj. “I attribute this mainly to us walking around and going to advisories to sell them because students were having a hard time finding the form online.”

While this was a successful fundraiser, there were a few challenges along the way.

“With the hybrid schedule, we only had half of our student population at school at a time,” said Ukaj.

This made it harder for them to both sell and deliver the flowers in time for Valentine’s Day on the 14th.

Ukaj stated, “I’ve been noticing this year that students are not participating in school fundraisers and activities as much so that itself was a bit of a struggle.”

However, despite these difficulties, they persevered and ended up selling the entirety of their inventory.

Overall, the board members were pleased with the results of their Valentine’s Day-themed fundraiser, and plan on doing something similar in the future.
