Preston Alessio: All-State Soccer Player

It’s not often when a freshman comes into high school and even plays one minute on a varsity sports team. Even less often, a freshman starts on a varsity sports team. However, the least often occurrence is a freshman making the All-State team as a result of their performance. Preston Alessio is one of those freshmen.

Alessio burst onto the scene as a starter for the Hawks Boys Soccer Team and made an immediate impression. In the shortened Covid-Season he amassed 12 goals and along with Nathaniel Smith, formed an offensive powerhouse.

“Even when we did not have team practice, I either was shooting on the net at my house, doing dribble moves, or just working out in general.”

Through this hard work in the off-season, Alessio was selected to the CIAC’s All-State Team along with Nathaniel Smith. Alessio credited his fellow teammate and captain as well as the rest of his teammates in helping him achieve this honor.

“We push each other in practice and Coach makes us work hard. It shows how hard we work, not just in practices but outside of it as well.”

Obviously, this season was not easy. “We had to battle all the Covid restrictions and some of the practices and games we had, we did not have all of our places.”

With all these restrictions hampering the team, Alessio noted that the morale had been worse for the team than other teams he had played for in the past. But, that did not stop the Hawks from compiling an undefeated season and a Division Title.

“I was upset we could not have an NVL or State Tournament” Alessio lamented, “however, I was excited we got to play as many games as we did and how we came together as a team.”

This is only the beginning for Alessio and the Hawks. Along with him, a group of talented underclassmen are expected to take the reins from the graduating seniors.

Along with playing for the Hawks, Alessio plays his offseason Soccer out of the Connecticut Futból Club (CFC) in Bethany. His team travels around to different states playing against some of the best teams around. The work against better competition helps him train for the future, Alessio noted. But, he is not just focused on high school.

“I just want to play at the highest level possible and for as long as possible…whether that be as a Division 1 or Pro player. I just want to keep playing,” Alessio remarked.

Becoming All-State is one of the hardest things a high school athlete can accomplish. Preston Alessio did this as a freshman, and he has a bright future ahead of him.
