Hawk Productions Club: Producing the Woods

“Lights, camera, action” is a common phrase used in room 219– the Digital Media room, where the Hawk Productions Club resides. If you have a place in your heart for this term, this is the classroom for you to be in.

Hawk Productions is Woodland’s Digital Media club which produces short videos, competes in local competitions, and works together to produce videos for any and all to see. To get into this program, all you need is a passion for leadership, an interest film production, and a creative side of yourself.

Linking with this club, is the Digital Media courses that are offered by Ralph Riello, the head of the Hawk Productions team. Riello started this club back in 2008 and has been devoting his time to it ever since.

Each year the team enters in multiple competitions, such as the Expo Fest, DMV contest, Forty-Eight Hour Film Challenge and many more events. Previously, the team won the Forty-Eight Hour Film Challenge for five years straight along with many more awards. An objective to give 100% in the activities they do ultimately gives them first place results.

Besides competing in such competitions, the team and Digital Media courses also produce their show called Hawk Talk. Monthly, a fifteen minute video is written, produced, edited and shared by this group of filmmakers.

Two anchors star in Hawk Talk and present compilations of student-made short films and much more. For these videos, the sky’s the limit. All the different creative ideas and all the different themes are made directly by the students. Students have a chance to test their creativity and do what they want on the show.

Whether it’s a one-man show or a cast and crew of twenty people, a lot goes into the production of any and all videos for the club. Riello believes there is a position for everyone: a writer, an editor, a camera-man, an actor and more.

“We teach students how to successfully communicate in an environment with competitive storytelling,” explains Riello. “It doesn’t matter if you what to be in show-biz or marketing or not, everybody needs to communicate better.”

The Hawk Production team hopes for more people to join the team and is looking forward to a big year for the students in room 219 with more awards, more learning, and more fun.
