Woodland Spring Fine Arts Night

As over two million Americans serve in the U.S. military, it is important to honor those risking their lives for the safety and freedom of their fellow American citizens. This is especially true as Memorial Day draws closer and the memory of those who gave their lives for America is honored.

At the spring fine arts night this year, the Woodland concert band and chamber choir will honor those serving currently and those who have served in the past with a patriotic themed concert featuring songs like “God Bless America” and “Armed Forces Salute”.  An invitation has been extended to local service organizations such as the VFW (Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States), American Legion, and more.

The concert will be held on May 25 as a part of Woodland’s Spring Fine Arts Night; in which students’ artistic work from all arts classes at Woodland is showcased.

Sean Lewis, music director at Woodland, is especially looking forward to the performance of “Armed Forces Salute” by the concert band and chamber choir in unison.  The song features the theme song for each branch of the military and those who have served are asked to stand when the song for their branch is played.  He adds that it’s nice to take the time to recognize our veterans, especially since there is so much that Americans don’t know they go through during deployment.

Katelyn Terpstra, a senior at Woodland, will perform for both the band and chamber choir in the concert portion of the night.  She sings as a soprano in the choir and plays tenor saxophone for the band.  She too is looking forward to performing “Armed Forces Salute”, especially since her stepfather will be standing during the army anthem.

The Fine Arts department has helped Terpstra find her love for music.  She first took band because she was interested in the arts and it served as a way to stand out from the rest of her family.  As new teachers came and went, each helped her to discover her true potential and how much she genuinely enjoyed it.  In her sophomore year, she took her first choir class since elementary school and has since received the ‘15-’16 school year’s “Choir Award” and participated in two regional festivals. Terpstra will continue to keep music a part of her life and has decided that she will major in Music Education at UCONN next year.

While only the music portion of the night will have a patriotic theme, guests can also expect to see artistic work created by students taking any art class from photography to theater at Woodland. Artwork will be displayed in the halls and guests are welcome to admire it.

Guests can admire artwork hung in the halls starting at 6:00 p.m. before the drama performance at 7:00 p.m. and the music performance will be at 7:30 p.m.
