Student Government Holds Open Privilege Forum

On March 21, 2017, student government will hold an open forum in room 231 after school to voice issues concerning senior privilege and how it may be unfair to other students or to propose new privileges to students. All students will be able to participate in this open discussion concerning certain privileges. Woodland Student Government’s Board of Education Representatives Abby Meliso and Anna Witkowski will be proposing the issue of upperclassmen privilege as opposed to senior privilege.

Anna states, “We’ll most likely address the concerns we’ve heard the most, which are topics that involve driving and parking. Some juniors want to be able to leave early if they have a study hall and some people want to paint or use chalk on their parking spots. I’d also like to possibly see a discussion about changing exemptions from finals extending to juniors. Other schools in the area do this, so I don’t think it would be such a radical change.”

While both of these issues are currently only senior privileges, some students believe that it would only be fair to also be allowed these treatments in all years of high school or at least during their junior year.

Abby discusses the desired outcome of the meeting, stating, “The ideal outcome of this meeting would be to come up with a coherent argument to present to student government/ administration to get more privileges for more people or to stay the same, depending on the outcome of the forum.”

If a student wants their voice to be heard, they must utilize the Student Government Board of Education Representatives to get their message across, since a student isn’t allowed to speak at any Board of Education meeting until they graduate. If a plausible solution is discovered through this open discussion, the issue has the potential to later be brought up as an issue at a Board of Education meeting in the future.
