Girls Swim Team Wins Sportsmanship Award

You’ve probably seen it before at a sports game. The teams line up up to shake hands and say “good game”, win or lose. It’s a sign of respect and showing that you play the game fair. This is what is called “Sportsmanship”.

The girl’s swim team here at Woodland recently received the award for “Best Sportsmanship in the NVL.” Receiving this award was a shock to the girls, according to swim team Captain Olivia Rua. To receive this award, teams need to show an abundance of teamwork and fair play.

“We are very supportive of each other and it shows because everyone will cheer and congratulate each other. After a bad swim, no one will overreact and be obnoxious, and in the same sense, we do not over-celebrate a good swim.” says girls swim captain Taylor Amore.

As a captain of a team you are the leader. You have to show your teammates right from wrong and how to work to make things better. You have to teach your team the true meaning of respect. Rua understands these responsibilities and has served as a positive example for her teammates.

“As a captain, in every pep talk before each meet, I made sure the girls knew to always be cheering for our girls,” said Rua. “Also, when other schools were still swimming I made sure that the girls knew to always be cheering for them. Even after a bad race we always congratulated and shook the hands of girls in nearby lanes.”

Not only were all the girls on the swim team ecstatic about receiving such an award, but Head Coach Mike Magas was as well.

“I know how special the girls on our team are and they all care deeply about each other and truly respect their competitors,” said Magas. “I am proud of each and every one of them and I know they are very deserving of this recognition.”

As for the girls swim team next year, they will continue to grow and be the supportive team that they are.

Amore says, “I believe they will have the same mind-set because it is instilled by the coaches and the captains see previous year’s captains doing it. The team believes in the importance of respect and sportsmanship and even without an award, it is something we want to continue.
