Winter Sports Warming Up

As the 2016 fall sports season finishes and falls cold, the winter sports are just warming up. The long months of winter for Woodland athletes will be filled with consecutive practices and nail biting games and meets. High expectations remain for some while improvements are on the minds of others.

Girl’s Indoor Track

As the Girl’s Indoor Track returns from their fifth consecutive season as NVL champions, expectations remain the same. Jeff Lownds will lead as head coach for yet another year. The girls’ first meet will be the Reindeer Relay at Wilton High School on December 17th.

Boy’s Indoor Track

As Coach Shea has left Woodland, Bill Ferrare will step in as the new head coach for the boys’ 2016-2017 season. The Boy’s Indoor Track team wrapped up their 2015-2016 season as NVL runner-up champions. The boys, like the girls, will attend their first meet will be the Reindeer Relay at Wilton High School on December 17th.

Boy’s Swimming

Boy’s Swimming finished their last season with a record of 2-9. The team is lead by Head Coach Tom Currier and Assistant Coach Michael Magas, a new addition but a familiar face. The boys will kick off their season at a home meet against Crosby and Waterbury Career Academy on December 20th.

Girl’s Basketball

The Girl’s Basketball team wrapped-up last season strong with a 13-7 record, looking to do even better this year. The team is led by senior captains Maddie Hupprich and Jenna Pannone and coached by Jessica Moffo. The girls hosted their first game home against Derby on December 13th and took the win 61-43.

Boy’s Basketball

Boy’s Basketball ended their 2015-2016 season with a mere 4-16 record, but the team plans to fix that record this year. The boys of the team involved themselves in a YMCA league over the previous summer in hopes to benefit playing in the winter. Senior Adem Rifati explains that he wants to see his teammates “improve on communication, commitment to the team and overall trust”. The team is coached by Tom Hunt. They will play their first game home versus St. Paul on December 20th.

Cheerleading

The Cheerleading team concluded their previous season by placing 4th in States. The winter is competition season and the team has been at every Football game this fall showing off what they have been working towards. The cheerleaders are led by senior captain Sabina Kica. The team shows their support by cheering at every boys and girls home basketball games and will begin their competitions in January.

Dance Team

In their last season, the Dance team finished as NVL runner-up champions. They perform their routines at the boys and girls basketball home games as well. The team will attend their first competition at Quinnipiac University on January 28th.
