Wednesday Night Lights: PowderPuff 2016

In all sports, practice matters. And nowhere was that more apparent than the 2016 Woodland PowderPuff Classic.

In a 28-0 rout, The Black Team, led by PowderPuff Champion coach, Chris Decker, demonstrated just how important practice is for a team. Led by impressive performances by Megen Sirowich, the ladies in black ran right through Coach Tomlin’s defense and robbed Team Money of their precious victory.

Even though the score did not show it, Team Money had a lot of heart coming into this game. The team made a sign and hung it up before the game, just like the cheerleaders do for the football team. Entering the game, they charged right through that sign with enthusiasm and a desire to win.

By the second play of the game, the Black Team was rolling. Sam Plasky ran for a touchdown that put Coach Decker on top 7-0. On top of that, the player of the game, Megen “The Savage” Sirowich, ran away with two touchdowns for the Black Team. Adding to the running attack was Morgan Stockheimer, who had the fourth rushing touchdown in the fourth quarter.

Even though Team Money was shutout, there were still valuable plays throughout the night. Emily Brouillette had a 60-yard completion to Maddie Hupprich that brought them into enemy territory. On that same drive, Gill Hotchkiss carried an outside handoff down the sideline where she was stopped inside the 5 yard line. However, Coach Decker and his defense held Coach Tomlin and Money was unable to score a touchdown as the defense forced a turnover on downs inside the 5 yard line- another example of how practice won over heart.

For Team Money, Emily Brouillette passed several times, but was only able to make two completions. Meanwhile, Coach Decker stayed with the ground game and was able to pick up four rushing touchdowns. His team passed two times at the end of the game and both attempts were incomplete.

“The key to winning was Ground and Pound,” noted Decker. “We ran the ball, while the other team kept passing.”

The 8th annual Woodland PowderPuff game was presented by Woodland Regional Student Government and ran by Class of 2017 Senator, Olivia Rua and co-chair Colin Kennelly.
