Fall Sports Come to a Close

Thanksgiving has come and gone, and soon snow will be falling. With that came the final games of fall sports. Though falls sports have come to an end at Woodland for the year, many of these teams have worked towards successful seasons once again.

The Boys Soccer team ended the regular with a 12-1-3 record, ranking them third in the NVL. The boys fought their way to semi-finals in the NVL tournament and worked to win their first game in the Class S State tournament. Senior captain, Anthony Oliviera ended his season All-NVL, while his fellow captains, Xavier Gibson and Zachary Powanda, went All-Iron.

Similarly, the Girls Soccer Team also had a great season, living up to the pressure after winning NVLs last season. The team ended the regular season with a 14-1-1 record, losing to only the the eventual NVL champions, while also making it to semi-finals of the NVL tournament and to the Class S State Tournament. Seniors, Sam Plasky and Gillian Hotchkiss as well as junior Haley Andrews went All-NVL, while seniors Jenna Pannone and Hailey Boris went All-Division.

The Volleyball team made it to Class M State Semifinals before losing to Tolland. Even with a loss, the team had a great season, with a regular season record of 14-4. The team made it to NVL Semi-Finals as well. Senior captain, Maddie Hupprich, went All-NVL for the team, as well as All-State. Three other seniors: Mckenna Cronin, Emily Brouillette, and Ally Mayne went All-Division.

Girls and Boys Cross Country also ran for great seasons. Girls Cross Country went 12-2 in the regular season, while placing third at NVL Invitationals. Emma Slavin went all-Division for the team. Boys Cross Country also had a winning season finishing with a 12-2 record and also third in the NVL. The team placed fifth at the Class S Cross Country tournament. Matt Luxeder and Kyle Crowell went all-Division for the team.

Girls Swimming and Diving ended the regular season with a 10-2 record losing to the first and second placed teams in the NVL. At the NVL championship, the team placed fourth, their highest finish since 2011. Junior Dia Gawronski, won both of her individual events, even setting a NVL record in one. This led to her being awarded NVL Swimmer of the Meet. Gawronski, along with senior captain Tatianna Lynn, went All-NVL, Lynn for her second-place finish in both events. Then, in the Class S Championship, the team got eighth, their second highest finish ever. Gawronski placed second in both of her events, leading to her qualifying for State Opens.

Football finished their season with the annual Thanksgiving game against the Seymour Wildcats this Wednesday, November 23rd. This game comes after the team’s win the week before against the Kennedy Eagles. With this final game, fall sports are officially over, leading to the beginning of winter sports this week.
