Drama Club Presents “The Crucible”

“The Crucible”, a play written by Arthur Miller, details the Salem witch trials that occurred in Massachusetts between 1692 and 1693. During this historical event, more than 200 people were accused of witchcraft, or the Devil’s magic, and 20 were executed for it.

Woodland Drama Club members have been busy preparing to enact the famous witch trials for this year’s fall Drama Club production, “The Crucible.” It will premiere at Woodland this Friday and Saturday night, December 2nd and 3rd, at 7:00 p.m.

Drama Club member Allison Cerasale will be performing as one of the many young girls who act as if they have been seized by the devil throughout the play. She will be acting alongside her sister, Erica Cerasale, and the two open the play together in the first scene.  Cerasale is looking forward to the play and hopes that the messages about honesty and false accusation it sends will resonate with many. Her favorite scene is the court scene in which her and other actors act crazy under the direction of Abigail Williams, a lead character who instigates lots of drama. This scene involves many emotions.

On the nights of the play, cast members will be selling handmade poppets at the concession stand. The poppets signify voodoo dolls in the play, which are believed to be involved in witchery and add to the drama driving the plot of the entire play. They also add a personal touch since the cast made them to resemble different characters from the play.

Coming to see “The Crucible” is a great way to learn more about colonial America and how the historically famous witch trials influenced the small town of Salem, Massachusetts in the late 1600’s.
