Sabina Kica Chosen to Lead Woodland Cheerleading Team

A new sports season means a new captains. Usually two to three team members are chosen to fill this role. This year, however, only one team member was chosen to lead the Woodland Regional High School Cheerleading Team. Senior Sabina Kica was chosen as captain for this year’s season.

Becoming a captain for a team is invigorating, but the role comes with responsibilities and certain standards as the leader of the team. And being chosen as a captain of a team your senior year of high school is incredibly satisfying.

Kica says “It was very flattering to feel appreciated and recognized for this position especially since I was the only one.”

Many people think that to be the captain of a sports team you have to be the “best” of them all. This, however, is not always the case.To be chosen as captain, the coaches also look at your attitude, how you deal and communicate with others, level of encouragement of teammates and honesty.

“My coaches were definitely looking for someone who can get the team focused and motivated before a competition or game,” said Kica. “I think it was because I’m not afraid to speak up. It comes naturally to me to take initiative and I think that’s a major quality in being a captain.”

Coming into this new role, Kica recognizes some aspects the team needs to work on. The cheerleading season begins with football games this fall, followed by basketball during the winter, and their competition season which lasts until March. Therefore, cheerleading is very much a year round sport. This being said, the team will definitely be working on their routines and making them the best they can be.

“I think changing our attitude is something the team really needs. We find ourselves blind to our own capabilities which I feel holds us back. I think a confident boost could completely change our entire mindset and would reflect on our routine during competition season,” Kica indicates.

All in all, cheerleading is a sport that takes effort, practice and lots and lots of time. Everyone is going to have their off days and leave a practice or game knowing they could have done a better job. A sport is something that you have to be dedicated to and try your best at. Kica stated that while she is comfortable with the sport, it can make her uncomfortable. It pushes her out of her comfort zone and challenges her, but that only makes her a better athlete in the long run. Cheerleading will always be a home for cheerleader Kica and it taught her patience and perseverance throughout her time on the team.

“I don’t know what I would do without these girls. They push me to be better and know exactly when I find myself in a halt. Cheering with these girls during my high school experience not only brought me friends but it taught me how to be a good teammate,” said Kica. “It’s not an individual fight. If my teammate is struggling, I am too. We help each other because their success is my success. We fail together, we lose together or we win together and that’s our choice.”
