Woodland Football Drops Week One

The Woodland Hawks Football team played Crosby on Friday, September 9. This game marked the beginning of the season for both teams and they were eager to kickoff the season.

According to the Republican American, Crosby came into the season favored to win the Brass Division Title. On the other hand, the Woodland Hawks have their fourth new head coach in four seasons.

The Hawks believe this will be a rebuilding year after the key loss of Sean McAllen, who graduated last year, and the lack of players on the team this year. This year, the Hawks will have an all varsity team, meaning all players will be dressed and should be ready to play during a varsity game. The Hawks will have a lot of inexperienced young players this year, which leads to a rebuilding year.

The game kicked off at 6:30 at the Woodland Regional High School football field. The weather was partly sunny, around 86 degrees at kickoff. Coming into the game, the Hawks were missing a key player in Cody Doyle, who is out six to eight weeks with a knee injury.

Quincy Koch was the opening day Quarterback after the departure of former Freshman Quarterback, Zach Bedryczuk. Koch came away with two passing touchdowns, both of them were to the Junior Running Back, Tom Smith. Smith would finish the game with three touchdowns, two receiving and one rushing. Koch had the fourth rushing touchdown of the game with the Quarterback sneak at the one yard line. Koch finished the game with a pass completion percentage of .231%, two touchdowns, and a total of 74 yards. Another notable offensive player is Isaac Negron who had thirty carries for 179 yards.

The Crosby Bulldogs were led by Senior Quarterback, Michael Marshall. Marshall would finish with a pass completion of .818%, one touchdown, and one interception by Edit Krivca. However, the Bulldogs offense was mostly carried by Senior Running Back, Donte Detanto. Detanto had two rushing touchdowns and a total of 127 yards. Crosby’s other Senior Running Back, J’hymel Ervin, also rushed to the endzone for two touchdowns in the game. Perhaps the most memorable offensive play for Crosby came towards the end of the third quarter when Junior Punt Returner, Jaedon Wolfe, returned a 65 yard punt for a touchdown. Another respectable offensive play for Crosby was Ricardo Morales’s 23 yard touchdown.

The Woodland Hawks (0-1) will prepare to take on the Watertown Indians (0-1) who suffered a 32-6 loss in Oxford during Week 1. The Crosby Bulldogs (1-0) prepare to move towards the Brass Division Title as they take on Derby (0-1) after Derby lost to Naugatuck 44-21 in Week 1.
