Fall Sports Prepare for a Successful Season

The excitement of the first two weeks of school may have come to an end, but fall sports are just beginning. From Friday September 9th to Wednesday the 14th, all sports will officially begin. Here is the schedule for all Woodland teams in this opening week.

 

Friday September 9th

Football, Dance, and Cheerleading

The football team is ready to start a new season after a 7-3 finish last year. The team has played in scrimmages, but officially begins against Crosby at Woodland’s football field. Kick off will be at 6:30 p.m. The team will be led by senior captains, Quincy Koch, Cody Doyle, Scott Lawrence, and Isaac Negron. On the sideline will be the Cheer Team continuing support before the competition season begins. The team is led by senior captain, Sabina Kica. Also, the dance team will be on the sidelines and on the field performing at halftime with captain Vanessa Adams and Sarah Rioux.

 

Girl’s Soccer

Girl’s Soccer is coming off an NVL championship win and a run in the State M tournament, the team is looking to continue on the winning with a game against Seymour. The game will start at 4 p.m. at Woodland’s soccer field. The team will also rely on captains: seniors Samantha Plasky, Jenna Pannone, Gillian Hotchkiss, and junior Eliza Smith to repeat the success of last year.  

 

Boys’ Soccer

Like the Girl’s Soccer team, the Boy’s will also be playing against Seymour, but will be away. The game comes after a surprising run to the NVL championship. The Boy’s may have lost some players, but are confident in those who still remain and new athletes. This includes the captains–Zachary Powanda, Xavier Gibson, and Anthony Oliviere.

 

Volleyball

After a jamboree in East Haven and two out-of-NVL scrimmages, the team is ready to start another run to NVLs with away game against Torrington. The team includes leadership from the three senior captains, Kate Minutillo, Mckenna Cronin, and Maddie Hupprich, as well as many others who witnessed and played for the win last season. The game will start at 6:00 p.m at Torrington.

 

Tuesday September 13th

Boys’ Cross Country

With captains Colin Kennelly and Matt Giaquinto, the team is ready to begin  another.  The team will compete at home against Naugatuck, Seymour, and Kennedy away at Naugatuck High School. The meet will begin at 3:30 p.m.

 

Girls’ Cross Country

The team will also compete against Naugatuck, Seymour, and Kennedy at Naugatuck High School at 3:30 p.m. The team is led by senior captain Meredith Dyckman as well as junior captain Emilie Noreika.

 

Wednesday September 14th

Girls’ Swimming and Diving

While the season normally begins with an NVL indicationals at Kennedy High School, but the coaches have collectively decided to cancel for this year. So instead, the team will begin their season with an out-of-NVL meet against Jonathan Law High School from Milford. The meet will be home against at the Woodland pool at 4:30 p.m. The captains for the team are seniors Olivia Rua, Taylor Amore, Tatianna Lynn, and Veronica Dergachev.
