Girls’ Doubles Tennis Team Goes Undefeated

Woodland Girls’ Tennis worked towards a great season as a whole, finishing the regular season with a record of 11-4, but the doubles two team had an even better season. Juniors, Alyssa Varesio and Angelina Padilla, the doubles two team, worked together towards an undefeated season. By each other’s side, they won sixteen straight games, taking the spot as the only two athletes on the team to stay undefeated.

It is always hard to go undefeated in anything, with steep competition and room for errors, but even harder when working with another person. Padilla and Varesio did not just have to make sure to play on top of their game, but compensate for their teammate if need be. Varesio, though, believes that this worked in their favor.

“We are very balanced and can salvage points from each other’s mistakes,” believes Varesio, “We are always able to back each other up.”

For the doubles to work well, the two players need to communicate well and click well. It will not matter if they are both great players if they cannot be great together. When one player is off their game, the other has to work to compensate.

“Not only do you have to make sure to click with your partner, but the games are very fast paced,” believes Varesio.

Together, they worked toward qualifying for states, which is based by winning percentage and served as a sure point for their team in many close wins. Many matches came down to one point, so with their constant wins, they helped towards the 11-4 record.

Varesio and Padilla will once again be put to the test when playing in the NVL-doubles tournament this Tuesday May 24th. This will begin home at the Woodland courts for noon. After that, they will play together once again in State S tournaments.
