Senior Project Spotlight:: Ultimate Frisbee

For four years, Matt Duncan has missed Ultimate Frisbee at Woodland Regional High School.

So, he knew exactly what he wanted his senior project to be-bring back the Ultimate program at his school.

Thanks to Matt Duncan’s senior project, kids can play a sport that is not often available at public schools.  His inspiration to bring back ultimate frisbee to the school was his brother.

“My  brother kind of established the ultimate frisbee team when he was at the school, so it inspired me to try to reestablish the team here at Woodland,” said Duncan.

His advisor and coach of the team Christopher Misuraca, a fine arts teacher at Woodland has had previous experience with Woodland Ultimate and was a part of some of the first teams.

“Woodland Ultimate is spotty and really only takes place when a kid wants to do it as a senior project,” said Misuraca. “A few years back, it ran for three straight years, but there are no current students here that played at that time.  It’s like it’s starting all over again.”

There are more and more schools now that are establishing Ultimate programs at their schools.

“Watertown has a team, Naugatuck has a very loose team, Amity has a very strong program, and Oxford is interested in competing with these NVL schools, or joining our team which would benefit us as well,” said Duncan.

They will most likely play in tournaments that Amity puts together and will play other out of league teams as well.  Duncan explained how Woodland’s program could play other schools.

“There are several other schools participating in Ultimate and we can either go to them or they can come here to play,” said Duncan. “Mr. Misuraca is trying to get medical forms and all that stuff so that we can play other teams and participate in tournaments as well.”

Both have had previous experience with Ultimate.  Duncan was excited saying,  “It has always been fun for me to play and it’s a passion, so I figured why not try to bring something I enjoy and my brother enjoyed back to the school.”
