GSA to Attend True Colors Conference

In a world where individuality is only embraced in a few countries and regions, it is necessary for people of minority groups to maintain strength and diversity. For members of the LGBTQ+ community, the True Colors Organization is a group that strives to achieve equality and provide a voice for those who are unable to speak.

The True Colors Conference, which has always been held at UConn, is a place for members of the community to unite and share ideas about what it means to be involved in the fight for equality. This year, Woodland’s Gay-Straight Alliance, or GSA, will be attending on March 18th and 19th.

At the conference, over fifty workshops are held for students and attendees to learn and meet new people. Professionals speak in presentations about a wide variety of topics, including dance, business, therapy, and even makeup artistry.

Jessica Block, Woodland Teacher and Advisor of Woodland’s GSA, believes that this conference is a great way for students to learn.

“This conference provides a safe environment in which students can learn and grow,” explained Block, “without worrying about fitting in or conforming to any labels.”

Block is also excited to see a presentation given by Ryan Berg, author of No House to Call My Home. Berg’s narrative tells a first-person account of what it was like to live in a home for LGBTQ+ teens who had been disowned from their families.

Right now, Woodland students are applying to be volunteers at the conference, which will allow them to receive reduced registration on the two-day package. By volunteering and actually attending the conference, Woodland students will take part in creating a welcoming environment for anyone who may feel discriminated against.

Woodland’s GSA hopes to have a fun bonding experience at the True Colors Conference, while also learning about how to promote a safe school environment and inspire individuality.
