Fantastic Beasts for a Fantastic Fandom

“The scar had not pained Harry for nineteen years. All was well.”

You wipe a final tear as you close the book, the Harry Potter series has come to an end. There will be no more trips to Hogwarts, no more jokes with the Weasley twins, no more lessons with Lupin. J.K Rowling had promised that seven books were it, there would be no more stories.

Then in 2013, Harry Potter fans heard the news that there would be another three movies. Rowling decided to turn Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, one of Harry Potter’s textbooks and a short Potter-based story that she had written for Comic Relief back in 2001, into a three-part movie series following the book’s ‘Author’ Newt Scamander.

The movie, coming out on November 8 of this year, will star Eddie Redmayne as Newt, who is a magizoologist (Magizoology is the study of magical beasts and creatures). Fantastic Beasts takes place in 1926 New York, right in the heart of the roaring twenties. This is exciting for several reasons.

One being that American Harry Potter fans finally get to see what the wizarding world is like in America. Including, in America instead of calling non-magical people muggles, they are called No-Maj.

Another being that there is said to be 11 wizarding schools in the world, three we know from the movies: Beauxbatons, Durmstrang, Hogwarts. J.K Rowling announced that not only is there a school in the United States, specifically New England, and that Newt Scamander met several former students, which could mean that Harry Potter Fans could find out what the name of the school is and where it might be located.

And lastly, the movie is taking place in the 1920s, with magic is being thrown into the mix. Bring on the Gatsby-esque Wizard Parties!

Besides the main actors and the time period, little is known about the actual plot or storyline because the Fantastic Beasts book was more of an encyclopedia of creatures rather than a story about Newt. However, J.K Rowling did give fans a slight summary.

She explains how eccentric magizoologist Newt Scamander comes to New York with his “trusty weathered case”. This case holds the power to be immensely larger than is physically possibly on the inside while still appearing ordinary on the outside, and within the case holds a collection of rare and endangered magical creatures from Newt´s travels around the globe. He discovers the American wizardry community is fearfully hiding from Muggles, also known as No-Maj in the states, and the threat of public exposure is an even graver concern than in the UK. Fantastic Beasts is the story of what happens when this uniquely skilled English wizard travels to wiz-phobic America and a variety of creatures, some quite dangerous…get out of their case.
