DaSilva’s Discoveries: Apple Picking in CT

Apple picking and pumpkin picking are two popular fall activities. There are multiple places to go pick your apples and pumpkins. One popular place is Lyman Orchard, which is in Middlefield, Connecticut. Lyman Orchards is open everyday from nine a.m. until seven p.m.

During those times one can pick a variety of kinds of apples and pumpkins. At this particular orchard, there are twelve different types of apples which are available from mid-August until late- October. Lyman Orchards uses Integrated Pest Management protocol to produce the best apples.

Pumpkins come in two different types and are available from late-September to late-October. not only a great source of potassium, pumpkins are great for carving and painting as well. Pumpkins can be used to make a delicious pumpkin pie or simply toast the seeds in the oven to make an tasty snack. At Lyman Orchards, they also make customized fruit and gift baskets. These baskets are now available for shipping and are available from September to April.

Another place to go apple picking is Rogers Orchards in Southington. Here, you can pick your own apples from ten a.m. to five p.m. from Friday to Sunday. Rogers Orchards grow over twenty different types of apples throughout the season. They also grow peaches, plums, nectarines, pears and apricots. They also practice Integrated Pest Management and are certified Eco-Apple and Eco-Peach growers. Many of their fruits are also sold at many grocery stores throughout the state of Connecticut.
