DECA comes to Woodland

It’s mid cold and flu season. You can barely breath, let alone stop sneezing. And. There. Is. Not. A. Single. Tissue. Anywhere. We’ve all been there. It’s the fate of many Woodland students come the second semester when the building’s supply of tissues runs dangerously low.

But not this year.

Because this year we will have DECA, Woodland’s  new business club.

DECA may be new to Woodland but there is a large network of DECA students on the state and national level. Members focus on business, marketing, finance and hospitality services.

“It’s really geared towards preparing kids who want to go into the business field,” said DECA Co-adviser Chris Tomlin, who has launched the Woodland DECA program with Jenna Broadbent.

This year, club members will be running the school store. They will use DECA guidelines and principles to set up a structured and effective school store.

“We’re changing things up with the school store,” said Tomlin.

One of their goals is to launch a box office out of the school store. Tickets for events like plays and eventually sporting events will be sold through the school store. DECA also plans to have the store open for at least two blocks during the school day, where students can go to buy school supplies or other things they may need like snacks. This past week, students completed a survey during advisory to help DECA chose which items they will sell in the school store.

Because DECA is a national club, students will have a chance to participate in competitions on the state and national level. There are a wide variety of competitions for students to take part in, but all require students to complete knowledge and skill based assignments.

“We hope to launch the competition aspect in about two years,” said Tomlin.

Tomlin hopes to have the re-designed school store launched after Winter Break. So fear not, Woodland students, come mid-February there will be a place in Woodland that has tissues.
