A New Twist and Addition to Beloved Tradition

Spirit Week 2014 is  just around the corner. But this year, there is ANOTHER week to bring out Hawk Pride. This year there is a brand new event sponsored by the Student Government–Woodland Way Week. Stretching from November 17th– 21st, this week is a way to generate school spirit.  Fittingly named, this week showcases the positivity and talent in the Woodland community, and is supported by several activities and events.

A week-long Penny War between the classes will be launched on Monday, November 17th. Four jars will be set up outside the cafeteria. To earn points for their class, students will dump pennies into their jar. Placing silver coins into other classes’ jars retracts points from those classes. Whichever class has the highest score wins, and gets to choose a charity of their choice to donate all the money generated during the competition.

Even the evenings will be filled with hawk pride as Woodland’s artists display their work during Fine Arts Night, Tuesday, November 18th at 6:00pm.  The whole community and student body is encouraged to attend and show their spirit for Woodland’s Fine Arts department by perusing the art display and attending the choral, band and drama performances.

Wednesday during lunch, students will be encouraged to sign a banner for Rachel’s Challenge, a call to arms for making a difference in the world by being kind.  Those that sign are pledging to “pay forward” kindness to their fellow schoolmates. On Thursday during Advisory the whole school will be making paper chains in support of Rachel’s Challenge.

One of Woodland’s newest traditions–and one of the most anticipated–The Powder Puff Game, will kick off at 6:30pm on the football field Thursday, November 20th. This flag football game pits junior and senior girls against each other in a competitive 11-on-11 showdown complete with guest officials and perhaps the pep band.  In perhaps a showing of the most entertaining school spirit of the week, half time will be hosted and presented by the “Powderpuff cheerleaders” (an elite squad of junior and senior boys choreographed by Woodland Dance and Cheer members).

To wrap up the week on Friday, the classes will be hanging up their class banners in the hallways for Monday to kick off Spirit Week.

Spirit Week begins on Monday the 24th with an all-school dress up day. The theme is America, so make sure to wear all your patriotic gear. Remember, on dress-up days, three clothing articles pertaining to the theme are required in order to count. The class with the most participation earns 1st place earns 40 points, 2nd gets 30 points, 3rd gets 20 points, and the class with the least participation gets 10 points. Seniors and juniors will be practicing their class cheers, which they will present at the Fall Sports Extravaganza on Friday.

On Tuesday there is another all school dress-up day, the theme for this one being Tourist Tuesday. All rules from Monday apply to Tuesday as well. Some recommended items for dressing up as a tourist include khaki shorts, Hawaiian shirts, and binoculars. On this day the freshmen and sophomores will be practicing their class cheers. After school, there is the Homecoming dance.

This year Homecoming is a semiformal with the theme of black and gold. The dance begins at 6:30 pm and ends at 10:00 PM. Tickets for the dance will be sold every day the previous week. This year’s homecoming court will be announced at 9:00 PM.

On Wednesday the 26th, there is the Fall Sports Extravaganza, during which there will be several competitions that are worth points. At the end of the event, the spirit shovel will be awarded to the class with the most spirit points. Students should be wearing black and gold on this day.

Make sure to show tremendous school spirit and enthusiasm during this week, which is one of Woodland’s most beloved traditions.
