“I’m Just Really Stressed”

Have you been experiencing low energy, headaches, tense muscles or an upset stomach? These four symptoms are the main signs of stress.

Woodland Regional High School is now entering their third month of school. Although it is so early in the school year, students are already frantically stressing out and rushing to get their work in before the marking period closes on November 3rd.

But school isn’t the only thing stressing students out. Students have to maintain a social life, sports, clubs or extracurricular activities on top of their school work. Now for some they may not have enough time after school to go home and study and that may be the cause of their slipping grades.

But do all of the students even realize the way stress is affecting them? The first step to overcoming stress is to know the symptoms of it, but most people don’t know they are stressed until they hit their breaking point.

Stress can affect people in many different ways. If it affects the aspects of your life it could have a huge impact on your ability to think, your behavior or your emotions. When stress affects your emotions it could make you easily frustrated, overwhelmed, and worthless or cause you to start avoiding others.

Our bodies are built so they can handle small amounts of stress but chronically undergoing long term stress is not healthy. An example of your body handling a small amount of stress is when you trip and fall and your body reacts by putting your hands out to save yourself. This small amount of stress you experience mid fall lets your body react by preventing yourself from getting hurt.

Ways to overcome physical stress would be to see a doctor so they could provide you with the medication or help your mind and body needs. You can also take time to relax, by going for a walk or taking a hot bath. Clearing your head by doing something you enjoy is an easy way to de-stress.

Small amounts of stress can be considered a good thing because your body is prepared for it. But being stressed for a whole marking period in school is not good for your body.
