Woodland Girls’ Track Team takes Home the Win

While almost all the attention was on the Boys’ Track and Field team on Tuesday, January 28th, the girls impressively swept the 2014 Indoor Track and Field NVL Championship meet.

Following the meet, the attention focused mainly on the boys due to the fact that they suffered a loss to Wolcott by only one point. The Woodland Girls on the other hand, came out untouched with an amazing 175 point victory. Seymour, the team in second, finished 91.5 points behind the Hawks with a score of 83.5.

Many key factors led up to this win on Tuesday night. The girls won nine out of fifteen events, and Senior Captain, Audra Blewitt, was very proud of how her team performed that night.

“I feel like we shocked the NVL,” said Blewitt. “Everyone thought we wouldn’t be strong this season because we lost key seniors, but we really proved ourselves by winning with a 91 point lead and I’m so proud of the girls for that. We’ve out-shined everyone’s expectations this year, even our own.”

Many female track athletes stood out that night, some including first year athletes and freshmen. Junior, Jazmyn Menzies came through with the win in high and long jump. Junior, Megan Lynch defended her title and won the pole vault for her second year in a row. All four relays, the 4×4, 4×2, 4×8, and Sprint Medley Relay (SMR) had wins, and senior, Ashley Michie had wins in both the 55 meter sprint and the 300 meter race.

This is the third year in a row that the girl Hawks were able to come through with the win for the Championship and this was definitely the biggest win. Woodland will come out of the indoor season strong and ready to compete in the outdoor season, where they are hoping to clench another win for the NVL.
