Volleyball Ventures into States

For the third season in a row, Woodland’s Girls’ Volleyball Team has made their way to the top. Coming off one of the most successful seasons in the school’s history, the volleyball team will enter the CIAC State Tournament seeded number one.

Last year in the 2012 season, the Woodland Hawks made it all the way to the states final game against Ledyard. The girls went into the game with a regular season record of 18-2, but not prepared for what they would face at the finals. After a disappointing loss, the team fell to second place in the Class M Championship. After being seeded number one, three years in a row, they team feels they are ready to come into the tournament this year more prepared than ever.

Volleyball started off their season strong this fall, the first nine games all resulted in wins for the hawks. However, for tenth game the girls were not so lucky and they fell to the Naugatuck Greyhounds. Despite the loss, the Hawks came back strong to finish the season as NVL champions on October 30th against Torrington.

The girls ended the season with an impressive record of 20-1-0 and a perfect 10-0 record for their games played home at the Hawk’s Nest.

“I feel very confident coming out of the NVL season winning the title and very determined to finally win a state title,” said senior captain, Brianna Pacileo.

Aside from feeling accomplished for doing well in the NVL Season, Paceileo has other reasons to be happy. Right now, she is the number eight player in the nation for kill stats this season, as well as the fact that she was the only sophomore starting on the court and has maintained that position both years that followed. With a breakout year this year and college coming up for her next fall, Pacileo was named MVP of the NVL league.

“Just being able to make it through the first round was a highlight. Woodland hasn’t been able to win an NVL title since 2009 and it was very exciting,” said Pacileo.

The Hawks season is not over yet, with the state tournament starting Wednesday, November 6th. For the first round of the Class M portion of the tournament the Hawks will be playing at home against East Catholic. The team is very experienced in this field though with is prior history with the nerve-racking state tournaments in the past.

“We are coming into the state tournament as number one seed and third time is a charm! We learned a great experience from making it to the finals last year,” said Pacileo.“This season we are determined to bring home the gold.”
