Teacher Feature:: Ms. Hrenko

Mary Hrenko, currently an algebra teacher at Woodland, came in third place at the 2013 Run For Revolution in the 20-29 age division on Saturday, October 12. With a time of 28 minutes 22 seconds Hrenko set a personal record for a 5K!

Hrenko started running approximately 15 miles per week in the beginning of 2013, progressed to 25 miles a week in March, and started her training in July for her first half marathon. September 15 Hrenko ran for the first time in a half marathon, the Surtown Marathon in Western Rhode Island, along with Lisa Olivere and Kristen Lengyel. Hrenko came in at 2 hours 22 minutes and 44 seconds.

“I was jealous of all my friends who ran last year at the Hartford Half,” said Hrenko.

It was then she decided she wanted to run in marathons too and has now been preparing for the Baystate Marathon on October 20th  in Massachusetts, and the Cox Providence Marathon May 4th  of next year in Rhode Island.

“I’ll be running 26.2 miles when I turn 26.2!” Hrenko said.

Hrenko prepares for her half marathon with a training guide from Runner’s World Magazine, although she modifies the schedule slightly she uses it as a base for her training.

“There’s a few times where I couldn’t run 13 miles,” Hrenko said, “so I ran 11 instead!”

Food choice has also played a big role in her training. Hrenko has been on a stricter diet since she started running and on days leading up to the race she usually eats more carbs and protein.

For her first full marathon Hrenko plans on talking to her brother who is a nurse on how to feed and train her body from January – May, in a healthy way in order to run the full 26.2 miles.

“You’re burning a lot more calories,” Hrenko said. “I mean you’re running for about 3 hours. So you need to know how to fuel up and recover the right way.”
