Boys’ Soccer Hopes to find Success this Season

“We’re progressing, coming along day by day. We’re getting better!” said Woodlands’ boys’ soccer coach Tony Moutinho after a devastating loss to Naugatuck on September 12th.  For years Naugatuck has been Woodlands’ number one rival and 7-0 loss was disappointing.

Although the boys have not won a game yet this season, Coach Moutinho has confidence in the varsity captains. Adam Macdonald, Daniel Leclerc, and Sam Merriman have been working on boosting the team’s self esteem.

The team graduated three of their lead scorers last year- Vigan Pacuku (center mid-field), Nick LaPerriere (left forward), and Michael Costa (sweeper). However, Mountinho believes he has a player who will be able to follow in Pacukus’ footsteps, sophomore, James Yacavone. Moutinho also feels that, junior, Sam Merriman, will be one of the team’s best players after he recovers from his back injury.

Moutinho has been playing his junior goalie, Brandon Octenik, full games while his substitute goalie freshman, Anthony Oliveira, starts the field. Moutinho told citizens News, “Once Oliveira puts on a few inches he can be one of the best in the league.”

According to the article, Moutinho has been keeping a positive attitude towards the young team this year and can see their potential. ‘On any given day,” said Moutinho, “we can beat anybody.’
