When it comes to following procedure there are many small tasks that people often overlook.

Because there are so many tasks involved with running a government, it allows for many job positions to assist with the process.

Sergeant-At-Arms is one of the many overlooked positions when looking at the Woodland Regional Student Council (WRSC).

Jeffrey Lauck, junior at Woodland, is the current Sergeant-At-Arms of the WRSC.

“I am responsible for all the WRSC’s belongings,” said Lauck. “I have to make sure they [belongings] are all secured and in their proper places.”

Along with things like keeping inventory Lauck is also responsible for setting up the Senate Chamber prior to the Senate Meetings.

“I [also] keep track of everyone that enters or leaves during meetings, and I lead the Senate in the Pledge of Allegiance [at the beginning of every meeting.]”

Lauck is also in charge of closing the doors before a meeting and securing them during a call to house [a parliamentary motion that does not allow any member to leave for the purpose of passing a bill.]

Along with these tasks Lauck is in charge of guarding the ballot box at any point during the meetings.

It’s all these little details that help a Senate meeting run smoothly.

Even the United States Senate and House of Representatives have this position to assist in keeping order on the floor of the chamber.

While often overlooked the job, without a doubt, is a necessary one in helping run a government.

“There is a lot of responsibility,” said Lauck, “but not so much where the workload is overbearing. Plus, it’s a leadership position so I get to be influential person in the Senate.”
