Woodland Supports

BEACON FALLS — Schools all over Connecticut have been showing their support for the tragedy occurred at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Friday, December 14, 2012.

Now it is Woodland’s turn to come together and help commemorate this tragic event.  For today, December 17, 2012, students in a grassroots movement chose to wear either blue and yellow (the Newtown High School colors) or green and white (the Sandy Hook Elementary colors).  Also, during the last five minutes of advisory, the whole school will be gathering in the gym in order to take a picture.

The movement was sparked by Facebook posts and continued locally by Woodland senior, Ayah Galal, who created a Facebook page called “Wear Blue and Yellow on December 17th,” and it was immediately “liked” and propagated by Mrs. Deborah Flaherty, Prospect resident and Woodland teacher. “I can’t exactly tell you where it started, it was happening and we just grabbed onto it,” said Flaherty.

The picture will be going through many schools in Newtown to show them the support that Woodland is ready to give. Galal and Flaherty plan on sending the photo to Newtown in a show of solidarity and strength. The picture will be sent to Sandy Hook Elementary School, and the entire community.

“One thing to remember is to reach out to all the schools because they are all affected,” Flaherty said.

Many students have been contacting teachers and administrators to find out other ways to let Newtown know that this community is ready to help.

“We want to make sure that our efforts are being used in a way that is best going to help the community and families,” said Flaherty.

Flaherty noted that there may be other opportunities to help Newtown; one way may be donations.

“It sounds like there has been a fund set up in Newtown where people can donate to that fund and they, in Newtown, will disperse the money where it is needed,” Flaherty says.

However, she also added that this has not been confirmed and more information can be provided by contacting Ms. Rebecca Folta and Ms. Kristine Burns.

Whether donating money or simply coming together as a unified group, Woodland is doing whatever they can to show their sympathy and support for all the affected families.
