Should The Color Purple be “Banned”?

This year is the 25th anniversary of the triple hit, The Color Purple. What originally started off as a bestselling book by author Alice Walker, was soon turned into an Oscar nominated movie directed by Steven Spielberg.
The movie was nominated for more than 11 awards and when Scott Sanders Productions decided to make it into a musical, producers from many different companies thought it was a bad idea.
Sanders did not listen to the others negative comments and decided to keep moving forward with their brilliant plan.
It turned out to be a great success and now the play is going on tour around the country.
After all of the success with the different productions of Walkers’ book, schools began reading it in class. But in some schools it became banned for some of the books content.
It repeatedly uses the N word and has parts of it where rape can occur. These were easy reasons for schools to ban the book and keep the students from reading about the violence that lies between each page.
The whole book is not like this, but it can bring tears to the eyes with dramatic scenarios and harsh words. It is seen as an amazing piece of literature, but really makes the reader think about how it used to be for the more unfortunate people in the early 1900’s.
Walker came up with the idea after hearing stories from her grandfather, and it’s a good thing that she paid close enough attention to what he said, without this story many may not have come to conclusions that are similar to what happens in the book.
The main character Celie who is played by Whoopie Goldberg in the movie and Dayna Jarae Dantzler in the musical production is a victim of violence throughout the book.
Being forced to marry a man who treats her terribly, and already has two children by her father by the age of 14 and is forced to give them up for adoption, is just the beginning of what is yet to come.
The book, movie, and play are all very moving and bring the feelings from deep in the words and are made heard by everyone.
