Watertown Defeats Woodland Boys Swimming

Tensions were high at Woodland Regional High School on January 29, 2010. The Woodland boys swimming team faced Watertown High School on Friday.

Loud, intimidating music blasted through the speakers of the pool getting the boys pumped up for one of the biggest meets of the year. Both teams walked out of the locker rooms silent, heads down, knowing today would be a challenge.

Coach Mike Magas was much acclimated to the pool he was coaching at, even though he was the coach of the away team. Magas also coaches the Woodland girls team in the fall, but in the winter, coaches the boys Watertown team.

“It was very strange coaching the away team. I kept referring to our team as Woodland,” said Magas.

Woodland placed first in the in the 200 Medley Relay. Junior Patrick O’ Dell led off by doing backstroke followed by Eric Beudoin, senior, doing butterfly. Andrew Cullen, junior, followed doing breaststroke and Adam Trumbley, senior, free styled his way to the end of the pool. The boys received the win and were not far off from breaking the record.

In the 200 Free, Andrew O’ Dell, freshman, suffered a tough loss. Ryne Wallace, a Watertown swimmer, clocked in at 1:56.94. O’ Dell, who steadily increased his endurance as he went along, clocked in at 1:56.98.

Woodland captured the win in the next three events. Patrick O’ Dell won the 200 IM, Eric Dietz, junior, won the 50 yard free, and Lindsay Boland, a senior diver, once again placed first getting a score of 210.

Junior Michael Christiano, a new diver, placed third in diving for Woodland.

After diving, Woodland only trailed behind by four points, 37-41. The teams were constantly battling for first and second place.

Although the team placed second in the 100 fly, Adam Trumbley, a senior, placed first in the 100 free. Eric Dietz, a junior, also placed third in the 100 free which helped Woodland rack up Woodland’s score.

Andy O’ Dell beat Wallace in the 500 free. Wallace had previously defeated O’ Dell in the 200 free, but O’ Dell was able to come back and beat him.

Trumbley, Dietz, Andrew Cullen, and Andy O’ Dell started as the A relay in the 200 free relay. They worked there hardest, but, unfortunately, placed second. The relay lost by 47 thousands of a second.

Woodland quickly rebounded from their loss in the relay by placing first, second, and fifth in the 100 backstroke. But, the rebound wasn’t enough to get Woodland to the win.

Watertown specialized in the 100 breaststroke and placed first, second, and third.
Placing first and second in the 400 free relay wasn’t enough to get Woodland to the win. Though, the team lost, the team was very proud of themselves.

“We did really well. We won almost every event, but they just got second and third. A lot of us got their own personal best times,” said Lauren Tompkins, freshman, and Fawn Moro, senior. Woodland is hoping to defeat Watertown in NVL’s on Friday, March 4.
