When Art Comes To Life

Many diverse cultures, techniques, and styles of art are displayed in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. A lot of local students in Connecticut have never been to the museum, or even been to New York City. For fifty lucky students at Woodland Regional High School, this has now changed.

When Music and Art teachers at Woodland decided on a field trip to the Metropolitan, one Drawing and Painting student, Eric Gomez was very excited. “I enjoy art and I had never been to New York City before,” said Gomez.

Gomez said he had hoped to see new techniques and styles of art displayed in the museum.  After the trip, Gomez found that it had definitely met with his expectations. “I absolutely enjoyed this trip, it was very exciting. There was just so much art that we didn’t even get to see it all,” said Gomez. Students who attended the trip to the Metropolitan had an opportunity to view the pieces of art created by highly acquitted artists such as Picasso, Monet, and Warhol.

Lisa Seagren, Drawing and Painting teacher here at Woodland, said she hopes this trip was a great experience for all the students attending.   “The students were able to view art of many periods and styles,” said Seagren.

She hopes the students recognized the elements and principles of art which they had been studying in class, and took a lot from the experiences they had on this trip. Seagren said the trip was successful, as it tied the Fine Arts curriculum into a real life experience

In previous years, the Fine Arts Department here at Woodland has given Art students the opportunity to experience art at other places too such as the Museum of Modern Art and the Scholastic Art Show in Hartford, CT.

Seagren’s illustration class also went to a courthouse to observe the court proceedings and to perform the job of a courtroom illustrator. The Fine Arts Booster Club has worked hard to make all of these trips possible. Thanks to them, many students have gotten the chance to further their knowledge in art, and hopefully more students will have this chance in the future.
