Hawks Volleyball Wins Against Crosby

Despite suffering a tough loss to the Seymour Wildcats on October 5th, the girl’s volleyball team didn’t let it linger around for long. They have won the last four matches, respectively.

On October 14th, the Woodland  Hawks defeated the Crosby Bulldogs with a score of 3-o. During the first game,  Crosby led early, 3-0, due to a few Woodland errors. But, Woodland went on a 5-0 run to lead Crosby early in the game by 5-3.

Junior Jessica Patrizi’s three consecutive aces helped Woodland to maintain and increase their lead. Patrizi finished the game with a game-best nine aces.

After Patrizi aces and Crosby errors, Woodland took the lead and never looked back. The Hawks led Crosby the rest of the game by at least three points.

Woodland capped the first game with a dominant score of 25-14.

The next game seemed just as easy for Woodland, or it could have been their hard work.

The second game started off close, but it would not stay that way for long. Woodland had an answer when Crosby tied the game in the opening minutes. They played assertive to take Crosby out of the game, both physically and mentally. Because of the Hawks’ hard play, the game ended with a forceful score of 25-5.

Hawks Head Coach James Amato believes that the reason that Woodland was so effective in the second game was because of the lack of errors they had.

“We hardly had any errors, either hitting or service errors. Everybody was making contact with the ball,” said Amato.

The match was not finished yet, Crosby fought back strong after their dreadful loss. They showed Woodland what they are really capable of doing in the third game.

Woodland led closely in the beginning of the game, having a highest lead of five. Crosby played aggressive and tied the game at 14-14. From then on, the game was back and forth from being tied, or taking a one point lead between the Hawks and the Bulldogs.  Everytime Woodland captured a one point lead, Crosby fought back and did not allow increase that lead.

After having a close fought game, Woodland pulled out to win it 26-24. That would end the match as a whole.

Taking a 180 degree turn from the first game, Amato believes that Woodland had too many service errors in the third game, which was what made Crosby catch up with them.

Crosby gave Woodland a variety of play to deal with, but the Hawks came back with a great number of players giving their own performance.

Senior Erika Barnett had nine kills and five assists to complement Patrizi’s 16 assists. Patrizi also had an outstanding nine aces and five kills. Senior Lindsey Wirsing gave Woodland five aces and two digs, while Senior Kaiti Lembo worked hard to compile six kills and two aces.

Hoping to continue their winning streak, the Hawks take on the St. Paul Falcons on Friday night in the Woodland gymnasium.
