Hurricane Irma Effects Woodland Alumni

From August 30 to September 12, category 4 hurricane Irma ravaged the Caribbean and Florida, leaving a wake of devastation in its path.

As Irma began to approach, many Florida residents were under mandatory state of evacuation from their homes, many of whom had to take flights to find safety before the storm, which led to backups, delays, and cancellations for air travel.

According to Jon Ostrower, a CNN reporter, American Airlines had to add over 20 flights to their schedule over the course of two days helping over 4,000  extra citizens evacuate, many of which were college students attending various universities in southern Florida.

Some of said students had to return to Beacon Falls and Prospect far earlier than they had expected. Class of 2017  graduates, such as Sabina Kica, Taylor Amore, Julia Caruso, and Kaylee Yerington were some of many displaced by the massive weather system

Taylor Amore, a freshman at University of Miami, left her new dorm over a week before Irma hit.

“It was surprising because they don’t prepare you to do it. Many of my friends bought tickets after it was categorized as a cat 5 and spent almost $1000 on a one way trip just to get home safely” she stated.

No Universities suffered any major damages aside from flooding in the wake of Irma, however nearly all in Southwestern Florida were left without power for some period of time with some areas still in the dark as of publication.

Meanwhile students are patiently awaiting to return to their college campuses despite the relative havoc that the state is recovering from.

“I’m excited to go back…it will be almost three weeks after we left that class [will] resume”
