Perspectives over time: Freshman Year vs. Senior Year

Freshman year: New school. More grades above you. A brand new schedule and a whole bunch of new experiences. Some freshman get involved, while others choose to sit at home and waste around all day. Some freshman try to be as involved as possible by doing multiple sports and thousands of clubs.

Senior year: More relaxed classes. More leadership opportunities, way more privileges and a whole lot more stress. Overtime, your perspective on life changes, just like how your perspective on Woodland changes over time.

Teachers:

Freshman Perspective: “So far I do really like my teachers, I just feel like they give a lot of homework and expect a lot from us, which can be overwhelming at times.”

Senior Perspective: “I think we have a lot of really good teachers at Woodland. Some people have issues with some of them, but for all four years I’ve been at Woodland I couldn’t complain about any teacher I’ve had.”

Advisory:

Freshman Perspective:  “I’ve heard is that you really grow with them.”

Senior Perspective:  “I love my advisory, but I also know that some kids hate their advisory. All four years you have one teacher or person that you could go to.”

Class Lengths:

Freshman Perspective: “I like the eighty minute classes. It’s better than just forty minutes like they had at middle school.”

Senior Perspective: “I love it! When I was a freshman I couldn’t get through it. As I got used to it, it was probably the best thing ever. You have time to learn what the teacher will teach, and then you will have time to do stuff about it.”

Homework:

Freshman Perspective: “Some classes are okay, some classes are in the middle, but I feel like it can be stressful at times.”

Senior Perspective: “I think in some classes and courses it’s not needed. I understand why it’s given, but some is not needed.”

Backpacks:

Freshman Perspective: “I like a big backpack because I can put all my stuff in it, and I don’t really have to go to my locker too often.”

Senior Perspective: “You need a pretty big backpack. If you’re one of those kids who don’t want to go to their locker, you need a pretty big backpack.”

1:1 Chromebooks:

Freshman Perspective: “I think it’s okay. I like having chromebooks, but at the same time it’s a lot of responsibility.”

Senior Perspective: “I was really hesitant at first. I did not want it, I did not want the responsibility, but now that I have it I love it.”

Electives:

Freshman Perspective: “There’s a very wide variety, so there’s a lot to choose from.”

Senior Perspective: “I think we offer some pretty cool electives, compared to other schools. Right now I’m taking a Holocaust elective, and I’m really happy I had the chance to take it.”

After School Activities:

Freshman Perspective: “I do really enjoy them so far. Volleyball’s really fun.”

Senior Perspective: “Some schools don’t allow sports, or don’t have funding for sports, so I think that it’s really good that Woodland lets students participate in after school activities.”

Midterms and Finals:

Freshman Perspective: “I’m a bit nervous for them when people bring them up.”

Senior Perspective: “I don’t think we should have midterms. I just don’t think they’re needed.”

Woodland’s Security Guards:

Freshman Perspective: “They’re so cool! I like them! They’re the nicest people.”

Senior Perspective: “They’re the best! I’ve noticed during my four years here: they do their job very well but they absolutely love the kids at this school.”

Coming To School Late:

Freshman Perspective: “Office people are nice so I’m not too nervous.”

Senior Perspective: “It doesn’t scare me, but I don’t want a tardy on my record.”

This Year’s Freshman:

Freshman Perspective: “Some are good, some are not so good. They’re interesting.”

Senior Perspective: “Some of the freshman are very bold. Some of the things that I’ve witnessed make me think back to when I was a freshman and would be terrified.”

This Year’s Seniors:

Freshman Perspective: “I’m not too close with most of them, but the ones in my creative writing class are cool.”

Senior Perspective: “In past years I’ve tended to look up to seniors and see what they do and how they went about getting college stuff done. Now that I’m a senior I am trying to put that into play for me.”

What You Look(ed) Forward To As a Freshman:

Freshman Perspective: “I’m looking forward to meeting new people, trying new things, kind of finding myself I guess.”

Senior Perspective:”I was looking forward to pep rally and football games. All the stuff a typical high schooler looks forward to.”

Graduation:

Freshman Perspective: “That’s a long way off, but thinking about that kind of scares me.”

Senior Perspective: “I’m excited to move on to a different point in my life.”

College:

Freshman Perspective: “I haven’t really thought about it, except for a school in Oklahoma because they have a really good meteorology program and I’ve always thought that was pretty interesting.”

Senior Perspective: “I’m terrified, but really excited. It’s like ten months away, but in ten months my entire future will be in my hands.”

High School Overall:

Freshman Perspective: “I’m liking it so far besides being stressed with like homework and transitioning here.”

Senior Perspective: “I think it’s been quite an experience, so many different things have happened. I really enjoyed coming in as a freshman and each senior class was so different.”

As you grow throughout your four years your perspective changes. This means that things that you see everyday people will think different things. The senior perspective was brought to you by Amanda Bernardo, and the freshman perspective was brought to you by Emma Krushinski.
