Woodland Senior Leaves Her Mark

Woodland Softball battled rival, Naugatuck High School, on Wednesday, May 10th. The Hawks are  led by Captains Maddie Hupprich, Jennifer Triana, and Emily Brouillette. Although they  lost 8-2 to Naugatuck High School, the team will always remember the game as a day they did something amazing.

The Hawks struggled this year after losing many valuable Seniors last season including Cameron Caswell, Carla Piccolo, Gina Farina, Samantha Buzgo, Samantha White, and Gabriella Bedryczuk. They had many holes to fill with the departure of these key players. This young team would have to battle more experienced teams, a disadvantage for sure. However, five seniors have stepped up to the plate to make sure that their team plays their hearts out in every game ,win or lose.

Senior captain, Maddie Hupprich, is one of many seniors to step up and lead the team. However, she leads the team off the field, which sets her apart. Last summer, Hupprich got taken out when she tore her Labrum in her shoulder after playing through both Volleyball and Basketball season, she then proceeded to have surgery in March.

Hupprich has been playing Varsity softball since she was a freshman but was expected to start her senior year until her shoulder injury forced her softball season to come to an end. But she’s still listed as one of the captains of the team for a reason.

“I show up to every game, I’m still cheering them on and try to be as supportive as I can. I want to be a good teammate to lead the team.” said Hupprich.

After Hupprich graduates, she wants to leave something special for the Hawks.

Hupprich says, “I want to leave a positive feeling , I just think that’s really important because we struggled with that these past few years, so leaving a good attitude and spirit for the team is really important to me.”
