Woodland Presents: “Guys and Dolls”

Nathan Detroit, an avid crap game player, makes a bet with Sky Masterson that he can’t take the missionary “doll” Sarah Brown to Havana, Cuba with him, making the bet in order to get the money he needs to secure a location for his crap game.  Adelaide, Nathan’s fiance, complains that she and he have been engaged for fourteen years and it’s time he finally settled down.

Set in New York City, this is the storyline which the play “Guys and Dolls” follows.  Having opened on Broadway in 1950, it is a romantic comedy that was written by Frank Loesser. It ran for 1,200 performances and has earned numerous awards and positive reviews.  This weekend, it will be performed by the Woodland Theater for two nights.

Laura Vitzoski, a senior at Woodland, will play the part of Sarah Brown, the missionary who travels to Havana with Sky Masterson.  She says her favorite part about “Guys and Dolls” is how big it is in every aspect, including the dances, costumes, characters, and personalities, that make it seem more like old school theater, which she loves.  Overall, she enjoys participating in the Woodland theater because everyone in it supports each other so much and it’s great to get to see everyone grow and develop, not only on stage as characters, but also as real people in real life.  She says she really loves the entire theater cast and excited to put on a great show with them.

The play will open at 7:00 p.m. this Friday and Saturday in the auditorium at Woodland.  Tickets will be sold at the door.
