Hauntings in Connecticut

The leaves have changed color and there is a crisp feeling in the air.  Halloween is drawing nearer by the day and costume ideas and candy fill the heads of children and teenagers alike.  But, festive costumes and traditions are not the only things on people’s minds this time of year.  Sooner than later, a horror story or two will creep in, reminding them of the more spooky side of Halloween.

Shows like American Horror Story, The Walking Dead, and Supernatural can all satisfy the thrill seeker within all of us.  However, the sense of reality sprinkled into these shows is what really scares us. For example, American Horror Story is based on the colonial colony of Roanoke, Virginia, from which every colonist disappeared.  The mystery as to how these colonists disappeared has served as the basis for scary stories that remind fans of the probability of horror in their own lives.

Chris Gilloven, a Beacon Falls citizen, has experienced supernatural occurrences in his own life. When living in one apartment in Beacon Mill Village, Gilloven and his family would witness unexplainable things happening on a regular basis. In one example, Gilloven would hear footsteps approaching the baby monitor upstairs in his daughter’s bedroom as she slept. He could then hear the footsteps cross over the living room, seeming as if someone was walking around upstairs when there was no one there but his daughter. Additionally, Gilloven would see his cats moving their heads back and forth as if looking at something when there was nothing visible in front of them.

In a different apartment, Gilloven lived near an elevator shaft in which it was rumored that an electrician had died after being electrocuted in the 1950’s. While living in this apartment, Gilloven’s stereo would randomly turn on without being touched. The stereo was naturally very loud and its volume dial normally would not be set beyond the one and half to second mark. However, when the stereo randomly turned on, its volume dial would be set to the tenth mark. People living near Gilloven would also report hearing children playing in the old stone basement when in fact there were no children in the basement.

Stories such as the ones told by Gilloven and the ones featured on today’s TV shows remind us of the real possibility of supernatural occurrences in our own lives. This Halloween, try not to be too scared by the spooky and terrifying aspect of supernatural stories.
