Oxford Runs on Woodland

Week 5 brought Woodland up against a common NVL foe, Oxford. At 0-4, the Hawks hoped to find some answers. However, they would come up empty once again. The Hawks fell to the Wolverines with a score of 48-6 as they were able to score only one touchdown in the past two games.

In Friday’s loss, Quarterback Quincy Koch had no pass completions in five attempts. This is the second time in three games that Koch has had no completions. This is a direct result of Koch having inexperienced, underclassmen as receivers. Recently, the go to receiver for Koch has been the Senior, Scott Lawrence, who is more known for the amount of tackles he accumulates than his receptions. The running game was highlighted by Freshman, Zach Kabusk.

Ever since Tom Smith had been injured, Kabusk has stepped up. Before the injury, Kabusk was able to find playing time when he played for JV. But, the injury gave him a chance to shine for the team and he has done so. Kabusk ended the game with 103 yards and a touchdown. This is the second time in three games that Kabusk has run for over 100 yards. The majority of his yards came off of an 80 yard touchdown in the first quarter. That very touchdown came on the first play of the game for the Hawks following the kick return. However, if the Hawks want to succeed, their entire offense cannot rest on one freshman running back. More players are going to have to step up in the next five games.

On the flip side, Oxford continued doing what other opposing teams have done, run, run and run again. The Wolverines ran for a total of six touchdowns while Senior Quarterback, Tyler Jacobs, passed for an additional two. Jacobs would finish the game with a completion percentage of .615 (8-13) and 145 passing yards. However, the offensive attack was led by three Senior Running Backs, Dan Herold, Joseph Romagna. Herold, and Griffin Downs. Herold ran for two touchdowns and 70 yards against the Hawks defense. Then, Romagna ran for one touchdown, 80 rushing yards, and a 17-yard touchdown. The fourth rushing touchdown came from Downs who also had 85 receiving yards and two receiving touchdowns.

The Hawks are now 0-5 as the look to play Wolcott (4-1) at home. Wolcott is coming off of a 33-30 win against Seymour which pushes their win streak to four in a row. Oxford improves to 4-1 as they prepare to play in Derby as the Red Raiders are 1-3.
