DECA Faces Restrictions Regarding Sale of Food

It’s fourth block, and lunch did nothing to satiate your hunger. You stare through the glass door longingly as you watch the metal overhead door to the cafeteria close. All hope has been lost. But wait. . . you turn around, and there the DECA store is, in all of its glory.

Recently, DECA has begun to sell snacks for those who wish to get something to eat between their classes. Though their selection is currently somewhat limited, they may become more influential in the food intake of our students. But, before they do, they have to take account for the limitations of being the DECA store, not the cafeteria.

One of the biggest limitations is that the DECA store isn’t considered a kitchen. Without sinks and kitchen cleaning supplies, they aren’t able to sell any self-baked goods.  This is a huge limitation, because they won’t be able to sell any more than pre-packaged foods and drinks.

Another rule that they must abide by is that they aren’t able to sell any food or drink half an hour before or after our lunch periods. This severely limits the time that DECA has to be able to sell goods, especially because most students choose to buy snacks during breakfast time.

“As of now, we only sell Smart Food, veggie sticks, and water. With the limitations of not being a kitchen, the idea of making baked snacks may never become more than an idea,” says Christopher Tomlin, one of the advisors for the DECA.

Though they sell only a few snacks and water so far, we may see more between-class snacks from our in-school DECA store.
