Woodland Golf: Back on Course and Ready to Tee Up Another Season

As each sports season begins, everyone is excited to see how each team will do-how the results from this year compare to the results from last year, and if a team can recover from loss of important teammates. The interest drove us to talk with Woodland senior Zach Crowell, a member of the golf team starting his fourth and final season. Here is what Crowell had to say.

What was the team’s record from last year?

We lost one time to Watertown High School, so 14-1.

Does golf have a NVL tournament, and if so, how did Woodland do?

Yeah there is. We placed second to Watertown.

How about on the state level, are there any tournaments?

Yep there is a state tournament, as well as a couple of two-man invitationals.

How did the team place in those?

We had a middle of the pack finish in states , Ryan Warner and Julian Perino finished second, I believe, at Steinberg invitational, and Ryan Warner and Mike Erickson placed – at Chappa Invitational.

What members did the team lose, as seniors leave each year, and with that how does the team hope to fill those places?

We lost Mike Erickson, Will Flourmann, and Owen Harris, but we have some younger players who are showing some potential to step up and fill in for them.

Who is the coach and how long has been with the team?

Mr. Carangelo is the coach and has been with the team since I think it was two years before my freshman year (2012).

Are there any teams that the team has decided are stand outs in the NVL?

Yes, Watertown and Torrington are.

And, lastly, how do you feel about the team and overall this upcoming season?

Great, we’ve got a lot of good players who are looking to step up and I think we can really get the wins when we need them with this squad.

Last season, the Golf team worked hard towards a second place finish in NVLs and a tie for tenth on state level. The team may have lost strong seniors last year, but the remaining team is ready to put in the work and keep winning this year. April 12th, the team will have their first match of the season against Crosby at Oxford Greens.
