YouTube Red Proves to be a Controversial Choice for Youtubers

Ad-free videos, exclusive content, saving videos for offline playing, and off-screen playing for $9.99 a month. Is it worth it? Google has created a new version of YouTube, Youtube Red that could maximize your YouTube experience. YouTube Red offers incredible tools such as exclusive content, off-screening, and a YouTube like never before, but the somewhat excessive price of $9.99 a month has made it a controversial switch for YouTube advocates.

YouTube Red offers many useful new attractions for YouTubers, including its new ad-free feature which eliminates ads all together. Some question whether $9.99 a month is worth dodging the ten to thirty second advertisement prior to video, however. Jasmine Coppola, a freshman at Woodland, found the ad-free feature wasn’t worth the price.

“Most ads you can either click out of or are thirty seconds long. So it’s not worth it.” explains Coppola.

A huge attraction offered by YouTube Red is the off-screening mode. With off-screen playing you can play videos in the background of other apps or while your phone is off. This will not only allow users to multi-task while listening to videos, but will allow them to listen to music while off the app as well.

Another feature is offline playing. YouTube Red customers can now save a video and watch it offline for up to thirty days.

Individuals that don’t want to pay for YouTube Red are going crazy over YouTube Reds biggest aspect which is exclusive content. Many people are upset because they don’t want to miss anything their favorite YouTuber’s post. For example PewDiePies new show “Scare PewDiePie” is exclusive and only able to be watched on YouTube Red. Large debates have surfaced relating to the denial of this content. It is questioned whether or not this fee for normally free content is fair to the long-time subscribers on YouTube.

There are several valid points as to why YouTube Red is a good choice or not, but the question still remains. Would you pay $9.99 a month for the new and improved YouTube Red? Although these changes may not be right for everyone, each YouTuber must decide for themselves.
