Pep Rally Controversy Explained

A petition was sent around during advisories asking for a November pep rally in order to recognize the fall sports during their seasons. In an effort to recognize these requests, extra time has been added to the School Wide Service Day in order to honor the fall sports teams and their successes.

Below is a letter from the desk of Mary Vlamis, Student Body President, clarifying the rebuttal.

As to clarify some rumors and to assure you that, as always, the student government is here to serve you and provide you all with high school memories you will cherish forever.

On Wednesday, November 25th, 2015, the entire student body will participate in a service activity. This activity will include making care packages to be sent to troops fighting in the Middle East. The collection for the items during advisory will occur throughout this week. At our senate meeting this Monday, the leaders of the VFW visited the student government. Veterans told us how important treats and little entertainment items are to soldiers.

One veteran said, “What seems like a small thing to you will mean the world to those men and women. Remember, they are out there fighting for you to have the right and safety of sitting in this school.”

I encourage everyone to bring in items for this drive. You owe it to your country.

Last week I received a petition of about one hundred names asking for a pep rally to be held on the traditional date. Unfortunately, since the event is less than a week away and typically preparation for pep rally takes more than a month, this wish is unattainable. However, we, the student government, are here to serve you. You spoke and we have listened. After the service activity on Wednesday will all come together to cheer on the football team before their game against Seymour, and praise the major accomplishments of the girls’ soccer and volleyball teams.

Pep-rally will occur the day before winter break, December 23rd. All fall and winter sports teams will be recognized, games will be played, and cheer and dance teams will perform. Pep rally was never “taken away”, the spirit shovel was never destroyed. The date was simply moved back. This allows us to recognize more sports teams, give cheer and dance teams more time to perfect their routines, provide student government members with the time to focus solely on pep rally rather than it being lost in the shuffle of Spirit Week, and ensure that Hawk Pride does not diminish with the end of fall sports.

A school wide service day where we make care packages for the troops was put in its place because I believe it is important for us as a community to come together and actually give thanks for our troops and what our country stands for before a holiday called Thanksgiving. I believe that contributing to something greater than ourselves will unite us more than screaming in the gym for 45 minutes will.

Respectfully,

Mary Vlamis[/su_box]
