Beacon Falls Hosts Fireman’s Convention

On September 20, 2015, the Connecticut State Fireman’s Association’s 132nd Annual Convention and Parade was held in Beacon Falls. Firefighters from all over the state attended, and brought their town’s finest trucks and vehicles. Over 60 towns attended this year, and hoped to win the contest for the best presentation.

The Parade Marshals Association is Connecticut’s only group to judge in statewide parades. About 20 judges attend each parade, depending on the size, and they have judged in both Connecticut and New York State. Each year, about 12 parades are judged; however, the Fireman’s Association parade is the biggest one of the year.

Lew Clark, President of the Parade Marshals Association for 25 years, knows a lot about what goes into a judging.

“We judge everything in the parade.” said Clark, “from the cleanliness and presentation of the truck to how in step the marchers are. We also look at uniforms and if each participant properly salutes when necessary.”

John Mis, First Lieutenant at the Beacon Falls volunteer fire department, was very excited to find out that this year’s convention would be held in Beacon Falls.

“We found out about two years ago that the convention would be held here this year,” said Mis. “Ever since, we have been planning for this awesome event and we really enjoyed hosting the convention this year.”

Some might wonder, however, what would happen if a faraway town was experiencing a fire while all of the firemen were at the convention.

“In the case of one of these towns having a fire,” said Mis. “Everyone has a backup squad at home ready to go.”

The Fireman’s Convention and Parade provided a great experience for all in attendance, and Beacon Falls was proud to host these honorable men and women and show appreciation for their services.
