Dance ‘Till You Drop on National Dance Day

For some, Saturday July 25th, 2015 may seem like a day for soaking up the sun, relaxing in a hammock, or mowing the lawn. For dancers across the nation, however, it can only mean one thing- National Dance Day.

Throughout National Dance Day, Americans are encouraged to embrace dance as a method of sustaining a healthy lifestyle; the event takes place on the last Saturday in July each year.

“This grassroots campaign encourages Americans to embrace dance as a fun and positive way to maintain good health and fight obesity,” according to dizzyfeetfoundation.org.

The Dizzy Feet Foundation provides scholarships to students who excel in the field of dance as well as those who contribute to dance education programs.

This celebration was initiated in 2010 by Nigel Lythgoe, co-creator of So You Think You Can Dance and co-president of the Dizzy Feet Foundation.

And this Saturday, celebrations will be taking place across the country. These free, open invite events will be taking place at the Music Center in Los Angeles and The Kennedy Center in Washington DC. Individual communities are also encouraged to create their own events.

The Dizzy Feet Foundation also provides people with “Everybody Dance” routines, short choreographed dance numbers for participants to learn, perform, and later upload to the Dizzy Feet Foundation website. Entrees may even be featured on So You Think You Can Dance’s National Dance Day clip.

Participants will be provided with step by step instruction from alumni and mentors: Stephen “Twitch” Boss and Travis Wall. Twitch will be demonstrating the beginner routine and Wall will be demonstrating the advanced routine. Both dances are choreographed to “Shut Up and Dance” by WALK THE MOON.
