Woodland Drama Club at Halos

Teenagers rise to their feet, extending their arms into the air, their fingers forming a rudimentary “W”  while chanting the phrase “Woodland! Woodland!”  over and over at the top of their lungs. This ritual can be heard in the stands of any Woodland football game, but on May 27th it was heard in the Palace Theater- proving, as Hawks do time and time again, that they do not have to be on school grounds to show some serious school spirit.

And the Woodland Drama Club did exhibit their Hawk pride when they arrived at the Palace Theater for the 12th Annual Halo Awards. The Halo awards, an event organized by Seven Angels Theater, was created to recognize high school students’ hard work in their school shows. As soon as the Woodland Drama Club entered the beautiful Palace doorway, it was evident that they were a close-knit group.

Everyone in the club was wearing rainbow-colored crosses with their sharp, award-show attire. The vibrant accents served as a nod to their spring musical, Godspell (which earned Woodland four Halo nominations), as well as a uniform to make the Woodland Drama Club look like a united front.

However, the students did not just appear to be a united front- they truly are one. Woodland was nominated for ten Halos, some in categories that included all of the participants, such as:

Best Speciality Ensemble in a Musical

“All for the Best” from Godspell

Best Contemporary Play

Dracula

Best Acting in a Cast in an Ensemble Production

Godspell

Other nominations were in categories which recognized only one student’s hard work, including:

Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play

Charles Bethin as Jonathon Harker in Dracula

Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Play

Jordan Baer as Renfield in Dracula

Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Play

Kiley Soulier as Mrs. Fern in Dracula

Best Standout Performance in an Ensemble Production

Sarah McVeigh in Godspell

Best Standout Performance in an Ensemble Production

Robert Weiner as Jesus in Godspell

Best Costume Design and Execution

Katie Steinbacher for her work on Dracula

Whether the award was for one student or the entire club- every member of the drama club cheered loudly when any nomination was called for Woodland.

Woodland’s enthusiasm for their nominees was noticeable, but their encouraging cheers paled in comparison to the reaction they had when a win for Woodland was announced.

When it was announced that Katie Steinbacher, who is president of the Drama Club, won Best Costume Design and Execution for her work on the costumes for Dracula, the entire club erupted in excitement.

According to Steinbacher, being called for the award came as, “kind of a surprise. It was a great feeling. I was really proud, and everyone was really proud.”

Halos are not just an award program, they are also an opportunity for high schools to showcase the best number or scene from the shows they did that year. Woodland chose to perform , “All for the Best,” a number from Godspell which earned them a Halo nomination for Best Speciality Ensemble in a Musical. Robert Weiner and Patrick Vogel, who were featured in the number, had palpable chemistry, which made for good-natured back and forth during the song.

The night was close to over when the nominees for Best Performance by a Supporting Actor in a Play were called. Amongst the nominees was Charles Bethin for his role as Jonathan Harker in Dracula. Woodland Drama Club members waited with bated breath for the winner to be called, and then exploded into hugs and shrieks when Bethin’s name was announced.

Even though Woodland’s two victories were for individual students, the entire Drama Club went home proud of their fellow actors.
