From the Desk of Michael P. Yamin, Superintendent of Schools

Date:       June 17, 2015

Subject:   2016 Region 16 Teacher of the Year

Regional School District #16 continues to participate in the Connecticut State Department of Education’s Teacher of the Year program. It is an opportunity for participating school districts to annually recognize and acknowledge teaching excellence. Each spring, staff members, students, parents of students and community members have an opportunity to nominate teachers for the honor. The nominations are carefully considered by a committee of teachers and administrators. I am pleased to inform you that Christopher Tomlin has been named as the 2016 Teacher of the Year in Region 16.

Christopher Tomlin is an extraordinary teacher, a tremendous role model for students, and a colleague that his peers could emulate.  He teaches Social Studies at Woodland Regional High School, is the advisor for both Student Council and DECA while maintaining the Junior Varsity Girls’ Volleyball coach position. Chris has helped create, introduce, and teach three new classes at the high school. He has served on a NEASC Committee and many technology committees over the years.  Through Chris’s vision and guidance over the last ten years, the Student Council has gained National Recognition.  The WRHS Student Council was only one of two student councils in Connecticut last year to receive recognition as National Gold Council of Excellence.  He started the DECA club with two students last year; and after six months, it now has 15 active members.  The accolades and achievements could continue, but I think the most telling characteristics that describe Chris’s ability as an educator, was said best by a fellow educator-“Chris teaches students in an academic yet engaging way. Just walk by his classroom before the morning bell, during any free period, and/or after school, you would see a group of young acolytes always looking to discuss some point or talk about something with Chris.”  “Simply put, his students are smarter after taking his classes.”

Chris is an outstanding choice, and I am honored to be the first to recognize him as the Regional School District #16 2016 Teacher of the Year!!!!
