“Women on 20s Pushes For Change”

Do you know whose faces are on the U.S. $1, $5, $10, $20, $50, and $100 bills? Answer- all dead white guys. But soon, all of that may change because of an organization pushing for a transformation.

An organization called “Women on 20s” wants American paper currency to feature the face of a woman, preferably one who has impacted the world. Nearly a century has passed since women gained the right to vote. To commemorate this suffrage, this organization hopes to place one historically prominent woman on the face of the $20 bill, replacing Andrew Jackson, who has graced the bill since 1928. “Women on 20s” believes in complete equality of the sexes, and putting a woman’s face on a bill will help achieve this goal.

The organization’s goal is to gather more than 100,000 votes, so they can gain attention from the government and the public. President Barack Obama must grant permission to The Secretary of the U.S. Treasury to change the bill. Then, the secretary must agree to change Jackson’s portrait. This can all be done, but first, the organization needs to gain strength.

Online voters will choose the woman whose face will replace Jackson’s on the twenty dollar bill. Fifteen historically influential women, including Susan B. Anthony, Eleanor Roosevelt, and Harriet Tubman are all listed on the online ballot. When directed to the website, voters are asked to select three women of the fifteen who they believe should replace Jackson as the new face of the twenty dollar bill.

Transforming American currency is a monumental change for America, and it would be a huge step in reaching equality. Women on 20s has already received a lot of interest in this idea, including an expression of interest from President Barack Obama, and they hope that their plan will come to fruition. One small step for women, a giant leap for womankind.
