Showing Your True Colors

True Colors is a “non-profit organization that helps sexual and gender minority groups’ needs be fulfilled.” The organization lets individuals actually be who they are, and show their “true colors”. Woodland’s GSA will be going on a trip on March 21, at UConn, to attend the True Colors event. At this event there are many activities. The day starts with a speaker to introduce the mission statement of the organization. Then, there is an option for high school students to take different workshops, for example, to help express themselves creatively, or politically standing up for the LGBT community.
Ms. Block, is the advisor of Woodland’s GSA who first heard of it when she was working with a GSA as a student teacher. “The best part of True Colors is that students who do not usually feel like they have a safe place in this world, or school, they have a systematic network of support and a place where they can express themselves however they feel when they are at the True Colors event.” Said Block. The support is welcoming to the students, who may feel uncomfortable at school.
GSA at Woodland can benefit from True Colors because people who may be dealing with some of the same problems as someone here at Woodland, can discuss and come up with a plan. It is huge to step to see what is beyond the walls of their schools, where there is a huge network of positivity.
“Personally it’s a really good feeling to smile at someone who really needs someone to smile at them during the True Colors event.” Says Ms. Block.
