Student Council Term Two Overview

According to Student Government advisor Christopher Tomlin, students can look forward to exciting events, both new and old, from the WRSC in the second half of the school year.

One of the new events is the selling of YUDA bands. These bands are unique bands, both in their design and in the cause they contribute to. First, Guatemalan children craft them, next they are sold, and then all the proceeds generated go directly back to the Guatemalan children to pay for their education. Student Government members found out about the bands when they went to a national conference in Florida last year, and were intrigued by the program. The Student Government is aiming to raise enough money to pay for two years of education for two children. Tomlin also adds that the Student Government is hoping to organize a Skype chat where the students can meet the children whose education they funded. Help the Student Government achieve their goal by purchasing a YUDA band, which can be purchased for seven dollars until the end of February.

The Class Olympics will be returning for the third year this March. If you are looking for an event in which you can express your class pride, athletism, or trivia knowledge, then Class Olympics is the ideal event for you. This annual event takes place after school for five days during the week of March 9th. Three boys and three girls compete in each event, with the exception of trivia, which only requires one boy and one girl. Students that have interest in competing will have the opportunity to sign up during a meeting with their class.

Student Council’s annual cleanup of a park in Beacon Falls or Prospect will be held in April. Elections day will be on April 9th. Holding elections  this early in the year is a new concept. The additional time allotted between the changing of the officers will give newly elected officers the chance to learn about how to best fulfill their role. A new twist coming to April is a Student Leadership week. As the name implies, the week’s purpose is to honor student leaders, such as team captains and class officers.

Another returning event is the Day of the Dead, which is powerful program that speaks out against making destructive decisions after prom. This event will be going on during a day in May.

June will bring the traditional, school-wide ice cream social. However, this year, Student Government is hoping to expand on the traditional ice cream social by adding a school-wide service day to it.

Student body president, Mary Vlamis, is enthusiastic about the upcoming events. In regard to the new additions, Vlamis states, “We continue to exceed our expectations and push ourselves harder, and we must continue to do so during this second semester.”
