National Honor Society Gives Back

The Honor Society at Woodland Regional High School welcomed a new group of students for the 2013-2014 school year. Not only did the students change, but so did the group advisor.

Previously, Woodland English Teacher, Danielle Pescetelli ran the group however, this year the position was passed on to a fellow English Teacher, Gail Pells. Running the group under Pells are students Casey Stevens, President, Ayah Galal, Vice President, Rachel Mariano, Secretary, Anna Boris, Treasurer, and Emma Conway, Sergeant at Arms.

With the second half of the year in full swing the students of the Honor Society have begun putting into action all of the community service projects that they thought of during the beginning of the school year.

The first event the Honor Society members hosted was on Saturday, February 8th, when a number of members gathered at St. Anthony’s Church in Prospect to make sandwiches. Students made peanut butter and jelly and turkey and cheese sandwiches to donate to St. Vincent DePaul in Waterbury. The event was a great success and students were quickly able to craft an impressive number of sandwiches.

“I think the event was really successful and we were able to make 130 sandwiches,” said community service project coordinator, Andrea Piccolo. “It was a really good service project because it helped us realize how little some people have and how nice it feels to be able to give back.”

With the first service project being such a success, the Honor Society leaders were excited to see what would happen after school on Tuesday, February 10. Here, members of the group gather in the library to create Valentine’s Day Cards for Veterans.

“I would say about 20 students came to the event,” said Stevens. “They worked hard to make 30 cards, which will definitely make the veterans smile.”

The goal of the Honor Society is to give back to their community. The group is hoping to host a number of other community service events throughout the rest of the year, one of these projects being Habitat for Humanity.

Along with their service projects, the group will be working to raise money by conducting a number of fundraisers. Honor Society students will be selling tumbler cups and t-shirts in the upcoming months and any purchases will be greatly appreciated.
